A Practitioner's Guide to Blood Sugar Support

Reviewed by Carolyn Mulally BS, RN, HN-BC · Holistic Health Partners

Healthy glucose metabolism is one of the most-researched areas in the supplement world — and one where ingredient quality and dose separate formulas that do something from formulas that don't. The products above are what our clinic recommends: berberine, alpha-lipoic acid, and targeted blends from Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, Vital Nutrients, Biotics Research, and Xymogen.

The two workhorses: berberine and alpha-lipoic acid

Berberine is among the most-studied botanical compounds for supporting healthy glucose metabolism — but it only earns that reputation at studied doses, typically 500 mg taken two to three times daily, which is why we carry it from four different practitioner brands. Alpha-lipoic acid supports both glucose metabolism and antioxidant status; controlled-release versions like ALAMax CR smooth out its naturally short activity window.

Blends and botanicals

Formulas like CinnDromeX and Blood Sugar Support combine cinnamon extract, minerals like chromium, and complementary botanicals into a single protocol — a sensible route when you'd rather take one well-built product than coordinate three.

How our clinic selects these products

Studied ingredients at studied doses, absorbable forms, third-party testing, practitioner-channel manufacturers. This is also a category where what you're already taking matters — which is why we'd rather talk with you before you buy.

Supporting healthy blood sugar takes more than one bottle.

What does berberine do?

Berberine is a plant alkaloid extensively studied for supporting healthy glucose metabolism and lipid levels already in the normal range. It works best at meaningful doses taken with meals — and it can interact with some medications, so tell us what you're taking.

Berberine or alpha-lipoic acid — or both?

They work through different mechanisms and practitioners often use them together. Which to start with depends on your goals and your labs — a good question for a free consultation.

Can I take these with blood sugar medication?

Only with coordination. These ingredients can add to your medication's effects, so talk with our practitioner and your prescribing doctor first. We complement, not replace, your existing care.

How long until I see anything?

Most studies on these ingredients run 8–12 weeks. If you're tracking labs with your doctor, that's the right recheck window — and our practitioner can help you interpret what changed.
