A Practitioner's Guide to Choosing a Multivitamin

Reviewed by Carolyn Mulally BS, RN, HN-BC · Holistic Health Partners

A multivitamin should be the easiest supplement decision you make — instead it's a wall of near-identical labels. The formulas above are the multis our clinic actually recommends: professional-grade options from Thorne, Metagenics, Pure Encapsulations, Ortho Molecular, and Designs for Health, spanning everyday two-a-days, comprehensive high-potency formulas, chewables for kids, and iron and iron-free versions.

Why professional-grade multis are different

Most retail multivitamins use the cheapest form of each nutrient — forms your body converts poorly, like folic acid instead of methylated folate, or magnesium oxide instead of chelated minerals. Professional-grade multis use active, absorbable forms at doses that actually move the needle, which is also why they're usually more than one tablet: meaningful amounts of two dozen nutrients simply don't fit in a single pill.

With iron, without iron — and why it matters

Iron is the one mineral you shouldn't take by default. Menstruating women, and anyone with documented low iron, often benefit — which is why formulas like Alpha Base with Iron and PhytoMulti with Iron exist. Most men and postmenopausal women should choose an iron-free multi. If you don't know your iron status, that's worth a conversation (or a simple test) before you choose.

Matching the format to your life

A comprehensive formula like UltraNutrient or Nutrient 950 delivers maximum coverage across several capsules a day. A streamlined two-a-day like Thorne Basic Nutrients or Twice Daily Multi fits people who want strong basics without the pill count. For kids — or anyone who won't swallow capsules — chewables like SuperNutes, Junior Nutrients, and ActivNutrients keep quality up without the fight.

Do I need iron in my multivitamin?

Only if you have a reason: menstruation, pregnancy planning, a plant-based diet, or lab-confirmed low iron. Excess iron isn't benign, so when in doubt, choose iron-free and test — we can help with both.

Why do quality multis take 2–6 capsules a day?

Because meaningful doses of 20+ vitamins and minerals physically don't fit in one tablet. A once-daily pill is a compromise by definition — fine for some people, but know what you're trading away.

Isn't a good diet enough?

For some people, yes — and we'll tell you that. A multi is nutritional insurance, not a food substitute. Where diet, absorption, medications, or life stage leave gaps, a well-formed multi quietly covers them.

What's the difference between these and a drugstore multi?

Active nutrient forms (like methylated B vitamins), chelated minerals your body can absorb, meaningful doses, and third-party testing. You pay for what's in the capsule instead of the marketing around it.
