A Practitioner's Guide to Women's Supplements

Reviewed by Carolyn Mulally BS, RN, HN-BC · Holistic Health Partners

A woman's supplement needs shift more across a lifetime than almost anyone's — cycle years, pregnancy, perimenopause, beyond. The formulas above are what our clinic recommends across those seasons, from Thorne, Metagenics, Designs for Health, Gaia Professional, and Pure Encapsulations.

Foundations built for women

Women's Twice Daily and similar multis handle the baseline with active nutrient forms; Prenatal Essentials covers the distinct demands of pregnancy and preconception with methylated folate; Ther-Biotic Women's addresses the microbiome considerations specific to women.

Cycle support

Vitex — in Gaia's standard and Reproductive Formula strengths — is the best-studied botanical for supporting cycle regularity and monthly comfort. FemGuard+Balance combines it with DIM and supporting nutrients into one comprehensive cycle formula.

The menopause transition

Estrovera's rhubarb extract is one of the most-studied botanical approaches to menopausal comfort, and Meta-Balance takes a gentle botanical route through the transition. Where testing suggests it, conservative DHEA (5–10 mg) may join the conversation — informed by labs, not guesswork.

Cycle years, pregnancy, perimenopause — each season asks different questions.

What should a good women's multi include?

Active B vitamins (methylated folate, B12), absorbable minerals, meaningful vitamin D — and iron only when your status calls for it. That last one is worth knowing, not assuming.

When should I start a prenatal?

Ideally before conception — the nutrients that matter most, especially methylated folate, matter earliest. If pregnancy is on the horizon, that's the time to switch.

What actually helps with menopausal comfort?

Estrovera's ERr 731 rhubarb extract carries some of the strongest botanical research for hot-flash-related comfort, with botanicals like those in Meta-Balance as gentler companions. Give any of them 8–12 weeks of honest trial.

Can I take vitex with birth control?

Generally not recommended — vitex works on the signaling your contraception is deliberately managing. Tell us what you're using and we'll point you somewhere better suited. Free, and worth the five minutes.
